What is the difference between a hit and a visit on a Website?

Hi Nikki,
A hit is counted for every file requested by a browser to your server. A visit is - depending on your stats package - generally counted each time a unique visitor accesses your site within a specific time period.

Noting the difference described by Jim is important, especially in dealing with third parties that like to discuss statistics with you in different capacities (i.e. our website gets 5 million hits a month is not the same as saying our website gets 5 million unique visitors per month).
