What is the difference between a hit and a visit on a Website?

Noting the difference described by Jim is important, especially in dealing with third parties that like to discuss statistics with you in different capacities (i.e. our website gets 5 million hits a month is not the same as saying our website gets 5 million unique visitors per month).
