Was wondering what the difference between them? I have heard of css and php but not ajax (which might be wrong). I was talking with a guy last night at a REI club and his parntner does this guys website. ( one of thse guys that doesn't like to leave virtual realty
) Anyway he mentioned that his sight has ajax and php. I asked him about ajax cause I hadn't heard it before. his explination was: click and grab then drag to where you want it. I had bought some website design software a few weeks abo and the only thing clos to ajax I see on the box about about what the software has was jsp. So since most of you guys on here are website and desigh gurus I thought I would ask about it.

Hi Drew,
I am getting ready to sign off for the evening, but here is a link to get you started on AJAX. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?...did=76779 850 I'll try to provide more information tomorrow. By the way, a good example of AJAX in use is your Google personalized homepage. |

There is much confusion about ajax. Let's see if I can clear it up a little. The term ajax is often used interchangeably with WEB 2. Simply stated, the purpose of WEB 2 is to make web pages and web applications interactive and to act, feel and look more like desktop applications. Originally, Ajax was the combination of XML and javascript now it used to describe most any server side or client side programming (php, ruby, java, css, xml, javascript, flash, etc) that moves the web to WEB 2. A main feature of Ajax is smooth transition of information without refreshing the page, i.e, multi-page forms, accordion effect, etc (see my site). Another is special effects some of which rival flash. I have some examples of Ajax/Web2 at Realty Vissions dot com (There was a recent server hack so not everything is back to working). My main focus is Ajax/Web2 and I am considering GPLing a listing management program that can be ajaxified. Ajax or WEB 2 is the next big thing, all major players (Google, MS, IBM, Sun, Yahoo, etc) are heavily invested. Update: I have a draft of an Ajax driven template where the pages are loaded without a page refresh. realty vissions dot com / template.php Last edited by Jim Messenger : 09-21-2006 at 03:11 PM. Reason: Removed live links until we find out more about the virus on the site. |

Thanks for the info. I did check out the examples from the website link you provided. One thing that struck me right off the bat was my Mcafee poped up and detected a TROJAN found and clean. When I clicked "continue what I was doing" it recomends a sweep of my drive. Which Mcafee always does when they detect soemthing and clean or delete an in trusion. So with that does ajax run the risk of running potential clients away?? This atually happened everytime I clicked and opened a new page.
The Trojan name was JS/Wonka |

Also check realtyvisions dot com/template.php which does not use the site template. Thanks |

I rechecked your site and it didn't trigger any response with mcafee, but when I was clicking through your pages some of them didn't work I got a 404 or there was a code with an error. you might want to go through each page from your home page and see if they are working. One of the pages that I didn't work was the Ajax enhanced blog.

There is always something new to learn. I don't have everything working on the site due to a security breach at the server. The site was backedup but not everything was restored properly. I have to rebuild the blog, I have it up but have to do more work on it. The important thing about the blog besides being ajax enhanced is that it incorporates the site template. I dislike blogs that have a use a different template. |

No Problem. I would hope if someone from here or in that matter anywhere would find a page that wasn't working on my site they would let me know too. It's like noticing that someone has a bat or two in the cave or something on their shirt or the old XYZ. IT's better to know right away and correct it than not know and have everyone smirk and point

You had also asked about PHP. PHP is a scripting language, and probably the most common use of this language is to provide access to a backend MySQL database (MySQL is a free open-source database), and serve up its data.
You'll notice that folks who use PHP and MySQL have web pages that have a '.php' file extension. You can look at an example of what PHP can do on the following pages: 1. Boston Irish Pubs - here is a a page that utilizes PHP, MySQL, and Google Maps to serve up the location of Irish Pubs across Boston. The location, and all the details for each pub are stored in a MySQL database, and PHP is utilized to access that data, and serve it up to the visitor. 2. Boston Condo Developments - here is a page that, again, utilizes PHP, MySQL, and Google Maps to serve up the location of various condominium developments in Boston. Hopefully this gives you a little insight into the power of these technologies. |
