Google uses its sandbox filter using a supply and demand formula. If there are more adwords advertisement in search results, the supplemental results seems to show up a lot less in those search results (unless your domain authority is pretty high).

That seems to be the only remaining importance of page rank. That is why pages like trulia rank for even small town usa real estate keywords even though the page that shows up could be three links away from the home page with minimal links pointing to it. Of course there are small differences between PR and trust rank but that is a whole new book to tell. To keep it short in my experience high pr does not mean high trust rank, where a high pr can help you with ranking only for title tag keywords but high trust rank gets you ranked for almost anything on the content for long tail or less competitive keywords
