Apple launches Spam Campaign: Go beyond Vista
I am used to the usual spam emails from all the little companies and illegitimate outfits. But, last night was the first time I’d ever received a spam email from Apple. Wonder who sold them my email address?
On the heels on Microsoft’s new Vista system, Apple sent their sales message that if I’m going to upgrade to Vista, I’ll likely need a new computer. So… why not just go ahead and get a Mac? It’s interesting that I have been considering a Mac purchase lately. But, in any case, this is spam email no matter how you cut it.
But… spam or not, it’s nice to see how aggressive Apple has been lately with their marketing campaign. The “PC vs Mac” ads seem to be everywhere I turn - they are on TV and on some of my favorite websites. And now their latest - and my least favorite - the email spam campaign. So, it would appear that this is going to be the year of the Mac war on PCs.
Just curious… did anyone else receive these emails?

This isn’t a spam email.
When you registered for an Apple account online or downloaded iTunes over the Internet, you likely gave Apple your email address and agreed to receive special updates from them.
See http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ , how the “Keep me up to date with Apple news, software updates, and the latest information on products and services.” check-box is selected by default. You forgot to un-check it.
Interesting nonetheless.
Cheers

Nobody else got the email, because everyone else unchecked the box.
February 3rd, 2007 at 2:56 pmYeah, Apple has several of my e-mail addresses, and I’ve received a few e-mails from them in the past few days, but no marketing like that. I’m sure they wouldn’t send anything you hadn’t agreed to.
But that ad makes sense. I think I’ll share it on my blog (with a link here, natch).
February 3rd, 2007 at 2:57 pm[...] Jim Messenger just posted this e-mail (opt in, I’m sure) ad from Apple on his blog: [...]
February 3rd, 2007 at 3:07 pmFunny thing is… you don’t need to enter your email to download iTunes… just hit download! skip entering the email address and uncheck the update box.
So you don’t get this again… go ahead and unsubscribe to your ’spam’.

February 3rd, 2007 at 10:14 pmMr. Pedantic here. It’s not SPAM (canned meat), it’s spam (junk e-mail). The Hormel company reserves the all-caps version as their trademark and lets us use the lowercase form to refer to junk mail.
February 5th, 2007 at 9:03 amNever been a big fan of Mac. Although, I hear they are getting pretty close to PC as far as the programs offered and functionality. It’s just the backwards way you have to go about things with a Mac that gets me!

Thanks Mr. Pedantic,

I have been working on pc’s for the last 12 years and I have never really worked on mac’s, I have been doing a little here and there with them.. Now that vista has launched, Im finding it easier to learn macs than vista.. Microsoft f-d up on this os if you ask me… another windows millenium
