MSN’s SPAM Hammer

Greg Hullender aka MSNDudeIf you have suffered from the disappearing page syndrome in MSN, then this post is for you. The good news is there is a cure. First, let’s discuss the cause. According to MSN there was a change approximately a month or two ago in which their “Junk Page Filter” was dialed up a notch (or two).

If your page - more specifically your homepage - disappeared around that time, I suggest you look at the following items:

The title - Are there repetitive words?
Keyword density - Too much?
Page length – Hint… less is more.
Number of outgoing links?

Think about it… Abuses of these items are common to SPAM pages, or as MSN refers to them: “Junk Pages.” It’s important to point out that abusing one or two of these might not hurt you. However, when you have reached a certain threshold of “XX” number of points… Bam, you’re gone. I was told that the highest number you can have on the Junk Page score before you get nuked is 255; although, for competitive keywords the score must be no more than double digits to rank well.

If you are suffering from the disappearing page syndrome please try making changes to the items listed above and then report back to us with your results.

If you look in MSN’s business pages, they give advice for how to build your pages. MSN says the Page Title should be between 50 to 80 characters (including spaces) and should be as close to a complete sentence as humanly possible. As mentioned in the post (above), they do NOT want you to simply put up phrases that repeat your keywords. They want something READABLE and MAKE-SENSE to appear on the Search Engine Results Page so that someone might actually WANT to click on the link to your site.

I just found this blog post via the forum - interesting reading and now starting to think a little more about the title on my homepage. Also was wondering if our objective to gather more site visitors to the internal pages than the homepage?

It does bring up some interesting points. SE’s are all dialing it up a notch to combat spam (although given some of the results lately, not that well). So it may benefit you on other engines as well by taking their advice.
